Correction appended: Due to an editing error, this story orginally reported that the shooting occurred on Tuesday night. The incident was Wednesday night.
A 29-year-old Ypsilanti man was fatally shot around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night in a gunfight that occurred less than a mile from North Campus, the Ann Arbor Police Department said.
The main suspect in the case, University engineering student Andrew Robert Myrick, is at large. No arrests have been made.
Residents from the 1500 block of Jones Drive, near the corner of Plymouth Road, called the police to report hearing several shots fired. After confirming that 1598 Jones Drive was indeed the scene of the crime, police entered the residence and found the victim.
About 12-15 shots were fired at the scene and an AK-47 type weapon was found inside the house, police said. Bullet holes were also found on the exterior of the red brick house. Police found signs of forced entry at the residence. AAPD Lt. Michael Logghe said police are unsure why the victim entered Myrick's residence or of any other motives.
An arrest warrant is being sought for Myrick, the last person known to live at the residence at which the shooting occurred. Myrick is a 28-year-old white male who is six feet tall and weighs about 240 pounds. A crime alert issued by the University's Department of Public Safety said he had shoulder-length hair.
"He's out and about and we're out and about looking for him," Ann Arbor Police Chief Barnett Jones said at a press conference this morning.
Police said Myrick has a history of run-ins with other local police departments.
"There have been some issues with Mr. Myrick in the past," said Ann Arbor Police Sgt. Rich Kinsey, who refused to elaborate on Myrick's record.
Logghe said Myrick should be considered armed and dangerous, but he said police don't want people to panic about something that may be an isolated incident. The street where the shooting occurred, Jones Drive, is not a student-heavy residential area. The DPS crime alert advised people on campus to "look assertive and be aware of your surroundings" and to walk with another person if possible.
Myrick is listed in the University's directory as an undergraduate engineering student from Melvindale, Mich.
Police have found no vehicles registered to Myrick or any vehicle he would have access to.
Kinsey said the family of the victim has been notified, but are not releasing his name until his extended family has been made aware of the situation.
The University's Department of Public Safety issued a crime alert in response to incident, urging people to use extreme caution near the area.
Anyone with information on Myrick's location or any other information should call the Ann Arbor Police tip line at 734-996-3199.

Hmm, I wonder why Myrick might have believed he needed to use deadly force against an Ypsilanti man (BTW, I wonder what race the Ypsi guy is - why don't they tell us?). (Continued…)

I didn't get one directly from the school, either -- only from my RA, and a club I'm in. And not until around 4 pm today. Ridiculous.

His mug shot is now posted all over the Fish Bowl. It's the first face you see walking in. Ugh.

I got two emails, one from environment advising and another from an email sent out to some student groups. Emails were sent to engineering students and I believe students that live on north campus. (Continued…)

I live on North Campus and an email sent to all North Campus residents was sent at about 2 am. I also received several follow up emails through out the day. (Continued…)

I did not get an e-mail from the University. Seeing as though the Department of Public Safety is supposed to be for the entire University, shouldn't we all be on their e-mail list? And shouldn't the entire student body get a warning e-mail when a murder happens and the suspect is a University student and it happens 1 mile from campus? Have they not learned from other schools (e. (Continued…)

Why hasn't the university sent out a general e-mail about this situation? As far as I can tell, I never received one. After all the e-mails sent during events last year to assure students about the University's pro-active role in safety, this is just ridiculous. (Continued…)
