Michigan football players bowl for Mealer

Michigan defensive line coach Bruce Tall had an unenviable task in January shortly after taking that job.

Toledo, Ohio is part of his recruiting territory, meaning it was his job to visit freshman offensive lineman Elliot Mealer, whose father and girlfriend died in a car crash on Christmas Eve on their way to Church. Mealer's 23-year-old brother, Brock, was paralyzed in the accident, too.

Tall said he was a little apprehensive about the visit, but it went smoothly.

Rumble in the jungle

It’s impossible to do justice to a film like “Tropic Thunder” in a review. While it’s the funniest movie in years, it just wouldn’t be right to leave it at that. This seemingly goofy action comedy from decidedly goofy director, co-writer and star Ben Stiller (“Meet the Parents”) is actually something far bigger. It’s an almost perfectly calculated satire — a film that works on more levels than you’d ever think possible, yet doesn’t linger at any of them — and will surely be seen as one of the most brilliant sendups of Hollywood ever conceived.

Detroit office focuses on prep

Forty-five minutes away from Ann Arbor, situated stores in the heart of Detroit on the same block as a McDonald’s and a handful of liquor stores, is probably the last place most high school students would think to start their application process to the University.

But according to Tyrone Winfrey, associate director of the University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions located on Woodward Avenue, the Detroit-based location is often the very first place that local students get a feel for anything maize and blue.
